State Supplementary Payment (SSP) Rules
Minnesota provides a State Supplementary Payment (SSP) on top of federal SSI. The supplement is administered separately by the state, not the SSA — contact Minnesota's human services agency for payment details.
Medicaid & Health Coverage Integration
Minnesota (Medical Assistance (MA)) sets its own Medicaid eligibility rules, stricter than the SSI standard, so Medicaid is not automatically guaranteed after an SSI approval. A "spend-down" option is available if income is slightly too high.
Office Walk-Ins & Hearing Offices (OHO)
Since January 2025, Minnesota field offices require an appointment for in-person service, including Social Security card requests — book online or call ahead before visiting. Walk-ins are still served for urgent situations (vulnerable individuals, military personnel, people with terminal illnesses) and at offices with minimal wait times. For disability appeals, Minnesota's Office of Hearings Operations (OHO) has hearing offices in Minneapolis.
